When sourcing custom activewear or streetwear, fabric thickness is not defined by subjective terms like 'medium weight' or 'heavy feel.' It is defined by GSM. Mathematically, if you cut a 1-meter by 1-meter square of fabric and weigh it on a precision scale, the weight in grams is its GSM rating.
GSM Demystified: Mass vs Quality
GSM measures mass per unit area (Mass in Grams ÷ Surface Area in M2). However, GSM does not equal fabric quality. A low-grade 300 GSM carded cotton will feel stiff and rough, while a 180 GSM combed compact cotton with elastane will feel silky, durable, and luxury-grade. GSM measures weight, not fiber staple length or knitting structure.
The Master 160–500 GSM Apparel Selection Matrix
- 160–180 GSM (Summer Tees & Running Singlets): 100% Poly Micro-Mesh or Lightweight Cotton. Ultra-lightweight, high airflow, rapid moisture evaporation.

3 GSM Pitfalls That Destroy Apparel Margins
1) The 180 GSM Track Pant Failure: Using 180 GSM fabric for lower-body activewear to save ₹40 per unit makes pants semi-transparent during squats and distorts pocket seams. 2) Sourcing GSM Without Stretch Recovery: A 300 GSM track pant made from cheap 2-way stretch knit sags permanently at the knees after 3 hours of wear. Patel Apparel pairs 300 GSM interlock knit with 95% stretch recovery testing (ASTM D3107). 3) Unchecked Fabric Shrinkage: High GSM fabrics shrink up to 6% in length if not pre-shrunk. Patel Apparel tests all runs to AATCC 135/150 standards to lock dimensional change within ±2%.
